How do I update AVG Antivirus in a pc with no internet connection?

I tried downloading the Priority Updates, Recommended Updates, and Optional updates from this page -

and copying them to my flash disk drive. Then I plugged it into the pc with no internet connection. Then I opened AVG Antivirus and clicked Check For Updates and clicked Folder, indicating that the updates are in a folder (in my flash disk drive). This doesn't seem to work. Why?? Any suggestions?

There is no conflict. I purchased AVG anti-spyware had I removed, because it did not find spyware and when spyware was found it was false/positive.

Recommend you use Superantispyware Free version. I use this program and it will find viruses/spyware with no conflict to your existing antivirus program.

Answer # 1 is 100% wrong. You only have conflict when you run two antiviruses programs. Will mess up you system. You can run three or four antispyware without conflict. I actually run five. Just make sure you have the resources, as one will or the other will always find what one missed.

"Disinfection Failed Moved" It sounds like it tried to "Heal" the virus infected file, but removing the virus from this file was not possible so it "moved" it (Probably Quarantined it)

i have my disk free space getting lesser and lesser [about 100MB every bootup]

i do not notice any other virus symptoms other than this

i run ccleaner but it displays 1GB+ at analysis, but deletes only 58-100MB.

i deleted a 200MB-installer file but it did not show up on the free disk space of my drive.

my system restore setting is on 2GB+

i have Zonealarm as antivirus.

If nothing you found here is working, try doing this. Sorry about your luck! Did you try system restore? If you want to go back to when you had your comp almost new, you must first save any important files to a CD or floppy.... in Windows XP......go to start, all programs, accessories ( second column ), system tools, system restore ( bottom, right column )

close all other windows, before using this. Then Restore to an earlier date. After your done, restart your ( comp. ) windows. Good luck!

Well, at least you know what to do. I don't really understand why it always lessens every reboot, unless you always install a new software in your pc everytime. Try going into safe mode and run ccleaner there, it should help. Try going into C:\Documents and Settings\(Your name)\Local Settings\Temp and delete the files there, and of course disk cleanup which I assume you should have done it already. It shouldn't post any problems.

I tried mcafee and norton. They are ok but norton seamed to blog down the system or slow the pc down or ram or whatever. And boot time took forever to.

I agree. Kaspersky is the best anti-virus by far. But it is expensive. But ZoneAlarm Security Suite (not the firewall) uses the Kaspersky engine as the anti-virus component of the suite, so its a good one too.

If you are looking for a free anti-virus, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. I get a windows bubble saying my system performance is at 47% and something else is at thirty-something percent. Your first problem is that you have two antivirus program running and this causes serious conflict with your system.

You really should go to start, run and type in regedit and click "OK", and your registry will open. Now click on HKEY Current USER, and open "software", and look down the list of programs for Kaspersky and remove the associated keys. (Take great care not to remove keys not related to Kaspersky or you will have more trouble).

I have Spy Sweeper already installed in my computer. I was told to get something else to keep my computer safe because my mom needs me to download LimeWire. I heard AVG Free was good. An attention warning popped up and said that there is another antivirus/security product installed on the computer already and that it is not advisable to habe more than one antivirus product running on the same computer. Yes seriously this is a mistake too many computer users make.

You absolutely Cannot have more than 1 antivirus running on your computer. You can have more than 1 antivirus scanner or something but not more than one antivirus that offers realtime protection, or that works all the time.

If you do keep both on then it will result in problems because if they both try to access the same file to moniter or something it will glitch up your computer. I have heard more positive reviews from avg than i have from spysweeper so i guess if you need to keep avg.

also, you said you need to use limewire? i seriously suggest you dont. Know matter what program or How many programs you have to protect you p2p like limewire will ALWAYS find a way in your computer at some point in time.

my suggestion? download bittorrent. torrents are like p2p but better. the reason? limewire accessess ur comp and its internet full time leaving it constantly open for someone to hack. however, things like bittorent are ONLY on when you are downloading a torrent, and even then it does not leave open areas in your security for hackers like limewire does.

You format your c drive asap. Or else try removing the infected files manually from your computer and see if that helps or else format.
It's probably not a virus, but a worm of some sort. You should get AdAlert, or SpyBot Search and Destroy (both are free.) It is probably something associated with a website that you visit frequently, or a program that you downloaded (for file sharing, etc.)

My windows liveonecare subscription ran out today so I'm av-less. Should I just renew or use different software? I want something that protects against viruses, spyware, adware, trojans, rootkits, just ALL the bad stuff out there. A firewall would be great, but sometimes they're not that good. I've heard Kaspersky is a great solution but it's very expensive. Internet security has everything while it's antivirus has everything but a firewall. (ANS) I can only tell you about my own experience with Zone Alarm, I have used Zone Labs free basic firewall for over 5years now ( Zone Alarm version 2.361) its a very fine product and possibly one of the best pieces of free software I have on my XP Pro workstation.

**What is important to understand is how a firewall protects you, with Zone Alarm it uses SPI (stateful packet inspection) which works at a very low level of the OSI networking model. SPI is a well proven method of protection is extremely tough and robust against attacks. If you care to look at almost any half decent router (wired or wireless) no matter what the model or make they all use SPI as the method of protection.

NOTE: SPI is FAR more powerful than just packet filtering firewalls.

**With Zone Alarm the product is used by literally millions of users world wide, I think that says something by itself.

**Zone Alarm is almost set it %26 forget it once you have given the correct permissions to various programs i.e inbound %26 outbound access.

I bought Norton Antivirus 2007 a few months ago and installed in my HP XP Notebook. In testing TuneUp Utilities 2007 recently, I am advised that there is no Anti-Spam software in my computer. To get the Anti-Spam facilities, I have to pay for such.

To get what you call "anti-spam" software, you need to have something like Ella for Spam Control or Spam Butcher, or something else like that. Ella is free if you have Microsoft Outlook, but to get it for Outlook Express, you have to buy it.

Spam Butcher is free, however. So far as I know, Norton does not have anti-spam software included in its antivirus. Most all antispam software today is called "trainable" meaning you teach it what is spam and what isn't. If you have only Yahoo mail, it already has the best spam blocker there is.

I bought my XP (media center edition) just before this new vistas came out and sent away for my (almost free) upgrade to home edition. I havent bothered to install it yet since my bought for antivirus wasnt compatible. i was wondering if it was worth the bother of installing, my computers meant to be vistas compatible with 1 GO live memory and 350 hard drive but i've heard a lot of bad things about vistas.

I suggest instead that you update to XP Service Pack 3 if you haven't already (just google for it) which can actually speed up your PC a bit and gets rid of the 20000 updates and patches issued after the last few years.

People are so anti-Vista and it gets really annoying. People think that just cause the stuff they bought years ago doesn't work on Vista it means Vista sucks. Noooo it means you have to buy recent stuff that's Vista compatible, you can't just expect every single thing in the world to work on new stuff just like that. Vista is just fine for those of you that don't do anything other than surf the net. But there are bugs like any other operating system. I use Windows XP on my tower and vista on my laptop and I can't really see any problems except the annoying pop up asking me if a certain program is ok to install.

Just over the past few days my pc is running very very slow, it takes about 15 seconds to open or view something whereas before it was instant. I found 20 gigs of DL'ed porn on my Buddy's PC, she has 3 boys-LOL She was mortified. I found it searching for .jpg. .avi, and .mpeg files try that also look for .mp3 and .mp4. Disconnect from the internet for a day, does it stop? If so, someone is putting something in there somewhere. Go into your computer and write down the file sizes of stuff in there-compare them a day later. I found a program that was storing log files, instead of dumping them that way, almost 10 gigs worth. Do a search for anything you don't know, or recognize you find in your program files and add remove programs. Anything more advance and have a tech savvy buddy take a look.

I just reinstalled Windows XP and chose the New Installation option as opposed to the Upgrade option so that the programs on my computer would be deleted and I could start fresh. So far, the list of programs on my computer consist of the Google toolbar, 3 different programs that came on a disc with my Sony camcorder and Avast Antivirus. This "balloon" keeps popping up saying HP_Recovery (D:) is VERY low on space. When I open My Computer and hold the mouse over the D: drive it says there's 15.3MB of free space out of a total 5.02GB total size for that drive. I have nothing to get rid of that I know of. Could it be that what was on my computer before I reinstalled Windows is still lurking somewhere taking up space? How would I find it and get rid of it? Is it obvious yet that I know almost nothing about computers? Please help if you can. I've used this software for years, very good AV product, low overhead and very customizable.

What I've done in the past is schedule the automatic scanning for a time that it shouldn't affect my use of the machine (like 3am M-Th).

That's what I'd do, I wouldn't disable the auto-scan but you should be able to disable it in the schedule of the scan.

Open the AVG Control Center, and go to the scheduler, and see if you can change the scheduling of your auto scan. The free version doesn't provide a whole lot of options for changing the scheduling options so you may not.

Those are all good programs, but Never install more than one anti-virus on your PC, as they may conflict with each other. On the other hand, its always good to install more than one anti-spyware.

AVG is a great programme, as others have said.

Another one which our tech at work installed and which I have later installed at home is 'Spybot Search %26 Destroy'.

Thi is a handy little programme which seeks out 'bots' and 'cookies' which have found their way onto your computer, and 'zaps' them.

It is an extra to an anti-virus program, not a full anti-virus programme, but well worth having.

Also, some toolbars, such as the Yahoo and Google toolbars have 'Pop Up blocker' options.

These are also totally free.

I have Windows Vista Business and I have used Windows Live OneCare for a year. It has worked fine, but now the subscription is running out. It will cost me $50 for another year, or should I use a totally different Antivirus, antispyware, and antimalware program? Are there cheaper alternatives that work better/faster/easier/use less resources? I have heard there are some free ones, but I am not sure about how quickly they update their databases, how well they work, and I don't trust trialware. I got a trojan horse/other malware infections on my other computer. Yet, I am lacking a decent program to remove it. I am using my Etrust-Ez Armor Antivirus, Which unfortunatly did not succesfully detect it. So, I downloaded BitDefender in order to detect it (30-Day Free Trial). It did detect it, but lacked the ability to remove it, it blocked it though. there probably isnt a virus, its just an advert trying to get you to buy antivirus software.

what you need is a piece of software that will remove the pop up.

Well did you downgrade? Usually its not the best idea to downgrade. If this is more new memory, make sure your motherboard supports it and its a good memory. If you get a program such as Uniblue's products that allow you to defrag your memory and such and give you more memory. If your running XP with this much memory you should be perfect, i don't know why it would be running slow unless you had a virus or something fattening up on your memory, but if you have Vista, that's another story, if you want any performance with Vista you need atleast 2gb's of memory. maybe it is not the right ram for your motherboard if that is all you changed. 880 out of 1gb available after boot is pretty darn good I'd say if you are on windows....maybe the issue is you are missing something important that should be running!

I have a Nokia E50 and the RAm fills up with some stuff after 2-3 days. I check in the app manager and everything is closed but still only around 6Mb are free. I don't have anything running in the background from what I know of. I have F-Secure antivirus up to date and scanned the phone for viruses.

Some key points to keep your PC Running quickly.

Try and make sure your Hard Drive is never more than Half Full. Regularly clean out your cookies, temporary internet files and do a defrag.

Sounds to me like you have plenty on there already. I would take it to the nearest computer store that does tune-ups and explain what it's doing to them and let them straighten it out. Beats going insane over the darn thing!

Format and reinstall the OS. That should fix all/any problems, just burn whatever u need saved on a couple of CD's. Should take about 4 hrs. but would be worth it in the long run. Remember always run your updates too...

I would strongly recommend you consider purchasing a product. Computer security is rather important. Besides protecting your data and important info (financial info, Social Security Number, etc), your computer runs much faster without viruses and malware present. There is a reason that products like Spyware Doctor charge, and it is because they do a better job than the free scanners out there.

Also be careful to avoid downloading random free products. A lot of them are actually badware claiming to be a cleaner.

If you run shareware, that depletes alot of the computers resources! Next time it does it, press ctrl, alt, dlt and look in the process list, see what is using the most memory. You'll find your problem!

Unless you really cannot afford to pay for a security solution, I would avoid free programs such as AVG, Spybot and Adaware. Shockingly these three programs used in conjunction now protects you from less than 60% of the threats out there today. In all seriousness, these programs (especially spybot and adaware) are no longer good enough to be your only protection against viruses, spyware and adware (as well as trojans, rootkits and other nasties). They used to be great programs a couple of years ago, but have now been overtaken by programs with next-generation approaches.

I second the person who recommended AVG. Norton is rubbish, always was, I don't know about the BT thing but I do know that AVG is very good and FREE.

You could see out your remaining contract with Norton but for me it's like the choice between a quick lift home in a comfortable car and using the return half of a bus ticket, I know which one I'd choose.

Go to control panel - then add /remove program. It is worth keeping Norton for the period you have paid for.
I use the free edition from BT %26 have found it to be great. There's regular updates %26 their customer care has been excellent in my opinion.

My computer(a laptop) had a problem..like 1 month ago, related with the hard disk and we gave it to the manufacturer (ACER) and they replaced the hard disk for free because we had a warranty.

1. Since you've got a trojan you need a trojan remover right? Go to www.ewido.net and install ewido. Update it and boot up into safe mode. Scan and see what happens.

Recently ordered a computer (Windows Vista - Home Premium). It came with McAfee Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall. I want to get rid of it and put on "Shaw Secure" which is a free antivirus/antispyware and firewall that my internet provider, Shaw, provides for no extra cost.

Is it easy to uninstall MacAfee, and is Shaw Secure good.?

you can uninstall McAfee in Add or Remove Programs, and then use your free antivirus. As long as you are not stupid and walk into virus situations online, then that software should cut it.

Shaw Secure isn't good. The performance was poor when I tested it (sent viruses onto it that I recently quarantined. only 10%, 2 out of20 were caught and quarantined)

Use McAfee, it's one of the best security software out there.

If you're unsatisfied, then use Kaspersky or ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite.
Shaw Secure is basically just F-Secure which has a fancy name for your ISP.
