AVG AntiVirus, AntiVir Personal Edition, avast! 4 Home Edition, and F-PROT for DOS....which is best?

Of these free anti-virus programs, which is best? Can anyone give me some feedback on their personal experience with any (or all) of them?

Is there a significant difference between the best of these free programs versus programs such as Norton or McAfee?

Go with the ratings. Visit http://www.cnet.com and search for any of them in the REVIEWS section. Then hit the COMPARE button.

But I say THERE IS NO BEST. Here's why.

I use Norton... it's good. If everyone used Norton, then a new Virus could KILL us all. But if we use different anti-virus solutions, then a new virus won't WHACK us all. It just makes good sense. But check the reviews. Norton is usually rated high. McAfee is usually a bit lower. Some of the FREE solutions are not listed at the ratings, but other articles and experiences show that they are pretty good.

Good luck and BE SAFE

I use Ad-Aware SE, AVG and Counterspy, no problems here.
AVG
I use AVG..I used Avast! and it told me that I had like 50 viruses when I didn't have any..so I guess just don't go with avast!, stick with AVG.
I have used almost all of these so here is my feedback
